What are your values when it comes to sustainability?
At Phemke we believe in preserving nature’s beauty, which is why we ensure that our products don’t harm the earth.
We use sustainable, natural materials only made from quickly regenerating plants such as linen, hemp, jute and raffia straw.
From raw materials, to production, to transport, to packaging and even down to our business cards, we’re slowly improving every aspect of the business to make it more sustainable.
Where does Phemke source their products and materials?
We source our products and materials from Madagascar. Handwoven hats and bags by women in rural villages near Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar.
We attempt to be as transparent as possible, ensuring that all products are ethically made and sourced as sustainably as possible. Throughout our site and blog we share stories about our products and the amazing artisans who make them, and if you have any questions, we happily welcome those - just pop us a message at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I see you support the slow fashion trend, what do you mean by “slow fashion”?
We live in a world where consumption is extremely high. Big brands constantly come out with new collections and “fast” trends, with mass production of garments that are transformed from the design stage to the retail floor in only a few weeks. This is not sustainable.
Slow fashion encourages education about the garment industry's connection and impact on the environment and depleting resources. It attempts to slow down the supply chain to reduce the number of trends and seasons, encouraging quality production and giving greater value to garments, thus removing the image of disposability of fashion.
Slow fashion encourages slower production schedules, fair wages, a lower carbon footprint, and higher quality end products. Phrases you will hear repeated are “quality over quantity” and “less but better”.
Supporters of slow fashion wish for the consumer to buy higher quality clothing and accessories, which has been ethically produced, ideally sustainable, with timeless designs that can be worn more than one season.
We use environmental benchmarks for fibers which helps us to ensure that the fabrics we use are eco-friendly and sustainable. Since 2019 we are a member of Clean & Unique, an online platform dedicated to simplify sustainability which enables and encourages people to build and amplify fashion brands for the future.
Do you collaborate with other designers and brands?
Yes! We welcome any opportunity to work with likeminded designers and companies. If you would like to collaborate with us, or have a great idea we should look into, then please don’t hesitate to send us a message at email@example.com or contact us through our contact form.
